How it Works
What is Coherence?
In EEG terms, coherence is the simplest way of describing whether different parts of the brain are performing similar activities at a similar point in time. Multivariate Coherence is what we use to measure functional connectivity between different parts of the brain.
While standard amplitude-based neurofeedback targets specific brainwave amplitude changes for rewards, the coherence training approach focuses on enhancing the functional connectivity between different brain regions. Multivariate analytics are used to determine the level of connectivity and drive audio and visual feedback.
How does it Work?
The Divergence coherence feature currently supports four-channel multivariate coherence neurofeedback training, which increases efficacy by improving upon traditional neurofeedback training methods as published in the famous research paper from Coben et. al. (Coben, Middlebrooks, 2018, Four Channel Multivariate Coherence Training: Development and Evidence in Support of a New Form of Neurofeedback).
Dr. Coben’s study demonstrates the potential advantages of four-channel multivariate coherence training over traditional amplitude-based neurofeedback methods in inducing significant changes in EEG metrics in fewer sessions.
These advantages suggest that multivariate coherence neurofeedback training may be more effective in addressing abnormalities in functional and structural connectivity, potentially leading to greater improvements in functional and behavioral outcomes for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. Coherence training can greatly increase efficacy and speed to desired outcomes, which helps in situations when clients feel “stuck” with their training progress.
Using it in Divergence
When you add the Multivariate Coherence Training add-on to a Therapist subscription, it unlocks the ability for you to create custom protocols that have events that use the “Coherence” training type. This will allow you to create neurofeedback protocols that reward clients based on their level of functional coherence between any sites of your choice.
